What Do Katherine Hepburn & Radnor Township Have In Common?
Here is a movie trivia question for you. What did Howard Hughes buy for Katherine Hepburn in 1939? Hint: Ms. Hepburn was performing in a box office smash on Broadway at the time. You guessed it, the movie rights to The Philadelphia Story. Back in 1938 & 39, the famous playwright Philip Barry wrote the play, The Philadelphia Story that highlighted the antics of a Philadelphia socialite and it was an instant success on Broadway. The setting for this story about love, marriage and divorce was an 850 acre estate know as Ardrossan Farms, which is located in Radnor Township.
Ms. Katherine Hepburn partnered with MGM studios to make the movie starring Cary Grant, Hepburn and James Stewart. The main character, Tracy Lord was inspired by Ms Helen Hope Montgomery Scott, daughter to the founder of the investment firm of Janney Montgomery Scott and wife of Edgar Scott, heir to a railroad fortune. They lived on the Main Line and entertained this country’s most famous celebrities, politicians and industrial executives at The Androssian Farms Manor. Most of the property is still owned by the Montgomery/Scott/Wheeler family and overseen by the Radnor Conservatory but a few select portions are up for sale. Sixteen home sites have been carefully planned and are available for development. Let’s take a look at what one developer is doing with this property…
