Main Line Homes for Sale - Wynnewood-Merion Station

Adjacent to each other on the eastern side of the Main Line, Wynnewood and Ardmore in Lower Merion Township are busy hubs known for their convenient shopping districts, wealthy residential areas and easy access to major commuter highways such as I-76 (the Schuylkill Expressway), I-476 (the Blue Route) and U.S. Route 1 and Septa train access to Philadelphia or points west. The population of the two towns together is about 25,000. Ardmore’s train station is also an Amtrak station for those taking trains beyond the Philadelphia area. The towns are less than 10 miles from Philadelphia, so the commute is quite short.

Intriguing many Wynnewood-Merion Station home buyers, is one of the Main Line's most notable attractions, its shopping. Just across from the Ardmore train station is the c. 1928 Suburban Square, one of the nation’s first suburban shopping centers, complete with original Art Deco exterior on its main department store building (originally a Strawbridge & Clothier outpost for its Center City Philadelphia location, now a Macy’s.) Most  smaller shops in Suburban Square are upscale – an Apple store, Barbour, Eileen Fisher, Lilly Pulitzer, Williams-Sonoma, etc. – and some are locally owned luxury boutiques. There is also a farmers’ market at Suburban Square that is an almost daily stop for those who want fresh meat, sweets, flowers and more.

Also on the topic on the shopping, King of Prussia Mall, with more than 400 retailers, including Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and other department stores, is just a 20-minute drive from the Ardmore/Wynnewood area. It is the second-largest mall in the U.S.

The central traffic artery through these towns (through most every Main Line town as it parallels the train tracks) is Lancaster Avenue, known as Route 30. This is important because in many places, this is a dividing line of sorts.

Main Line homes for sale on the south side of Route 30 tend to be more modest and affordable for first-time real estate buyers, and homes of the north side tend to be the larger stone colonials that most people think when contemplating buying a home on the “Main Line.”  Given that Gladwyne, one of the wealthiest ZIP codes in the United States, abuts this area on the north, it’s no surprise that some very substantial luxury Main Line homes for sale are located in the Wynnewood-Ardmore communities.

Another important part of Main Line life is the country club, and this area is home to one of the most exclusive. Merion Golf Club is consistently rated as one of the country’s finest golf courses. The courses at this storied private club will host the U.S. Open in June 2013, and over the years, Merion has hosted 18 USGA championship tournaments, more than any other course.

Other recreation options in the area include a first-run movie theater in the quaint town of Narberth to the east, or the more independent-film/foreign-film theater, the Bryn Mawr Film Institute, to the west.
