Rydal in Abington Township, Montgomery County, Pa., is a community of tree-lined streets and stately houses, many built of stone, dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The advent of passenger-train service in 1888 between Philadelphia and the area triggered residential development, and this suburban area off of the historical Old York Road was born. To this day, a pretty Victorian-style stone train station stands at the intersection of Old York and Susquehanna Roads. While the SEPTA train still picks up and drops off passengers each day for the 30-minute trip to Center City Philadelphia, the station now holds a U.S. post office.

Rydal is a choice community for many residents because it feels very suburban yet remains convenient to the city; has choice public schools in Abington Township and is convenient to a number of highly regarded private schools, including Germantown Academy and Abington Friends; and is near a wide variety of shopping areas. Historically, residents would have shopped in nearby Jenkintown, but growth along the Route 611 corridor in the past 40 years has created a commercial area with just about every sort of store one can imagine, including the ever-popular Trader Joe’s. It is worth noting that Jenkintown still offers a lovely shopping district with an array of restaurants.
