Italian Market Area Guide
Boundaries: 9th Street between Fitzwater Street to the north and Wharton Street to the south.
Every day except Mondays, the Italian Market -- the oldest outdoor market in the country that is still operating -- is the place where residents of Philadelphia go for the freshest meats, cheeses and produce. Also known as the 9th Street Market, this is the destination where you can get everything you need for Sunday dinner or serving a crowd.
From fresh-cut meats to ripe-from-the-vine veggies and specialty shops where cheeses, pastas and desserts are plentiful, the outdoor market offers anything amateur and professional chefs could need. After stocking up on ingredients, stop in one of the florist shops for an artful centerpiece and then head back home to prepare your provisions.
Many of the homes in the Italian Market area, which is really smack up against Bella Vista, or part of Bella Vista in many people’s opinion, are of the townhouse style with multiple floors. New construction and re-designed residences are available in the neighborhood, some with price tags of $500,000+. Loft buildings on Fitzwater and Washington are also popular and will garner $400,000 or more depending on the square footage available in the unit. The neighborhood also features some low-traffic streets perfect for families. The listings on these streets tend to be brick townhomes that are priced in the $300,000s. Of course, there are always fixer-uppers for handy first-time buyers, but even those will run at least $200,000.
