Queen Village Area
The Territory: South from Lombard to Washington Avenue; east from the Delaware River to 6th Street.
The Lifestyle: Best known for its eclectic shopping and superb range of restaurants, Queen Village is also known as Philadelphia’s first neighborhood. Adjacent to upscale Society Hill and diverse South Philly, with its historically Italian neighborhoods, the area is a true hybrid of the two. Streets of historic brick row homes and blocks of shops and restaurants make this a very pretty residential district. Home to about 7,000 people, the area has seen its residential real estate appreciate about 65% between 1999 and 2006. Quite a few people have made major investments in properties here; some have spent as much as several million dollars to build new or renovate existing homes, and wow -- what exquisite homes they are! One can only wonder what his is a major change from where the neighborhood was 20 years ago.
Queen Village is conveniently located within walking distance of Penn’s Landing, the Italian Market, and Center City. It is also served by five SEPTA bus lines, making it possible to exist without a car, or to just use a car-share service when needed. On-street parking is a bit easier here than in other city neighborhoods.
Shopping: Two of Queen Village’s most notable shopping areas are South Street, a stretch of stores and restaurants that range from the bizarre to the banal (great spot for people-watching after dark!), and the fabric district, the first one of its kind in the U.S.
Dining Out: The Queen Village restaurant scene features many highly regarded establishments, including old standbys Bridget Foy’s and the Famous 4th St. Deli, relative newcomers Hoof+Fin, Bistrot la Minette, Xochitl, Supper, Zahav, Zot (four-dozen Belgian beers on the menu!), Cochon and a host of others. Clearly, there’s enough variety for just about anyone’s tastebuds in Queen Village and Society Hill.
