Rittenhouse Square Area
Boundaries: Avenue of the Arts and 22nd St. from Market St. to Pine St.
Rittenhouse Square, known as the “Southwest Square” until 1825, is one of the five original city parks planned by William Penn. It was renamed after David Rittenhouse, Philadelphia’s original papermaker and an astronomer/clockmaker. While maintaining its “park appeal,” Rittenhouse Square has also become a social gathering spot, home to trendy and upscale shops, fine dining, arts and entertainment venues and lavish apartments – in fact, the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood is home to the most upscale real estate in the city of Philadelphia.
From Rittenhouse Square, you can walk to world-class entertainment, including the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts (home to the Philadelphia Orchestra), the Prince Music Theater and the Curtis Institute of Music. You can also visit arts venues such as the Rosenbach Museum & Library, which has the original manuscript of James Joyce's Ulysses in its collection, and the Philadelphia Art Alliance, plus many fine galleries.
The restaurant scene is so rich and varied that we couldn't begin to list them. You're best bet is to refer to a site such as www.urbanspoon.com and start your research there. That said, Le Bec Fin, Lacroix, Tinto, Parc, Audrey Claire and a herd of steakhouses are some of the highly regarded dining spots that populate the neighborhood.
Rittenhouse Square real estate offers luxury living in the heart of the city with modern and traditional residences, high-rise condominiums, apartments and historic town homes ranging from $500,000 to $10,000,000 (to $30,000,000 for one spectacular penthouse at the top of Two Liberty Place.) These distinctive properties allow you to have your own private getaway with the art, culture, and excitement of Philadelphia waiting outside your door.
