Naval Square is the former site of the Philadelphia Naval Asylum and Philadelphia Naval School, a precursor to the United States Naval Academy. In 1833, noted architect William Strickland designed three main buildings for the campus: Biddle Hall, the surgeon’s residence and the governor’s residence. They are considered some of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture in the U.S., and by 1971, the site was designated a National Historical Landmark. The 20-acre property is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Townhomes for Sale in Naval Square

Because of the site’s history, it may surprise people to learn that Toll Brothers was able to buy the site in 1988. By 2003-2004, the company began to add new-construction townhouses while keeping the exteriors of the historical buildings largely intact and converting them to condominiums. The result is Naval Square, an almost suburban-like neighborhood with verdant lawns, off-street parking and a gated entry. Many people have chosen it because it doesn’t feel quite a crowded as other city neighborhoods and it’s convenient to both Center City and University City.

Completed in 2005, the Naval Square development consists of townhouse-style residences, usually with three bedrooms and one- to three-bedroom condominiums located in the historical buildings on the property. The community includes a pool, fitness center, community room and shuttle service for residents.

Just adjacent to Naval Square is the Graduate Hospital neighborhood. Some might say Naval Square belongs in Graduate Hospital, but because Naval Square is so self-contained on its campus, we are keeping it as a separate entity. Read about Graduate Hospital, also known as G-Ho, here.
