  • Description

    Full-floor condominiums in a gorgeous 1929 building.

In the 1920s when construction in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood was booming, award-winning architect Grant Miles Simon was commissioned to design the University Club at 1601 Locust Street. Now we know this fine building as The Lanesborough, a 21-story Classical Revival/Beaux Arts-style building. From about the mid 1930s through the 1990s, it was used mostly as office space. In 2002, it was converted to condominiums and a three-story penthouse was added with Philadelphia architect Cecil Baker in charge of design work for the 85,000-square-foot building.

There are only 17 units in The Lanesborough. All are full-floor residences and sport custom designs with mechanicals no older than 2002 when the condo conversion occurred. Each home, approximately 3,500 square feet except for the penthouse, has its own climate control, gas heat and cooking, in-unit washer/dryer, a wealth of windows and high ceilings. It is just slightly off Rittenhouse Square, making it a good choice for the person seeking a tad more privacy than one might have in buildings directly on the Square.

About this Area

Rittenhouse Square

After someone moves to Rittenhouse Square, long Philadelphia's most exclusive neighborhood, it seems the Square has a way of becoming the center of their universe, the sun around which everything else revolves. OK, perhaps that's an overstatement, but talk to long-time residents and they are quite clear that this is the only place they would consider buying a luxury condo in Center City Philadelphia.
