Get to Know The Main Line

When the railroad was king, there was no nobler PA rail line than the "Main Line." Running from Center City to Paoli, what is today’s SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale Line encouraged the daily migration of railroad executives and other wealthy Philadelphians from the city to the sophisticated suburban enclaves that sit northwest of the city. Once known as the Welsh Tract, the area has a rich history as home to generations of the “landed gentry” who built expansive estates here.

Known as the setting for Katharine Hepburn's portrayal of socialite Tracy Lord in "The Philadelphia Story," life on the Main Line is as charming as ever as we move through the 21st century. The Philadelphia region's most discerning buyers choose to call Wynnewood, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Wayne home. Surrounding communities include Bala Cynwyd, Gladwyne, and Penn Valley.

Exceptional architecture is abundant on the Main Line, as is the diversity of housing. From modest twins and condominiums to lavish mansions set behind secure privacy walls and gated entryways and plenty of traditional-style homes in between.

Many Main Line residents regularly commute to Center City Philadelphia by car or regional rail, keeping the demand for homes quite strong in the suburbs. More than any part of the state, this part of Eastern Pennsylvania including parts of Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware counties have more million-dollar homes than any part of the state. Don't be surprised to see Gladwyne and Villanova listed among the wealthiest in the country.

Private clubs of note include Merion Golf Club (known for its challenging play), Merion Cricket Club - a favorite spot for lawn tennis, squash courts, softball, soccer, and other sports. Additional golf options include Overbrook Golf Club and Aronimink Golf Club. For equestrian pursuits, look no further than Radnor Hunt Club. The famed Devon Horse Show is a must-attend annual event on the Main Line.

Highly-rated institutions like Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College, Villanova, Cabrini College, Eastern University, and Rosemont College are just around the corner on the Main Line. There are also an array of private secondary schools (The Agnes Irwin School, Shipley School, The Baldwin School, Episcopal Academy, The Haverford School, to name a few) and highly acclaimed public schools.

Not even 15 minutes away from the Main Line is King of Prussia Mall with a brand new luxury wing with top brands like Hermès, Bottega Veneta, Cartier, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, and more. There are also quaint boutique shopping districts in Ardmore, Wayne, Gladwyne, and more. For those who may miss the foodie renaissance of Philadelphia, it will come as a pleasant surprise that some of Center City’s most lauded restaurateurs have opened successful fine dining destinations along the Main Line. Movie buffs can take in independent, foreign and first-run fare at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute and Clearview Anthony Wayne theater.
